iTunes Review

The ’70s boasted not one, but two Neil Diamonds: a mild-mannered crooner of romantic radio pop and a rock ’n’ roll showman whose concerts were packed with heroic grandeur and sweaty pomp. It’s the latter Diamond documented on 1972’s Hot August Night. Backed by an orchestra the size of a small city, Diamond unleashes jumpsuits, sermons on racial equality, feral grunts, and, of course, one awesome tune after another, including “Cherry Cherry,” “Red, Red Wine,” and “Cracklin’ Rosie.”

Best live concert

After listening to this album over the years I would consider it arguably the best live concert ever. Usually I find versions of song on live recordings just don’t do quite as good a job as the recorded. This album is the reverse of that. Each and every song at this live concert is superior than it’s original recording. Add the warmth and relationship Diamond has with the audience and you just wish you’d been there.

I remember this album from my childhood when I though the guy on the cover was the coolest looking dude ever. At the time I though it was really hard rock. I’d later be embarrassed to have ever thought it “hard rock”, but secretly still enjoyed the album. Now I don’t care if it’s rock, country or whatever, it’s great music with thoughtful lyrics and character. Loving reconnecting with some of my old favourites.

Huge fan

I wore down the vinyl on this double album listening to it over and over again. I would lay on the floor between the speakers to get the full immersive effect. I agree with the reviewer who said this is one of the few live recordings where the tracks sound better than the studio versions.

In a career that began in the 1960s, Neil Diamond became a major recording artist, an internationally successful touring act, and a songwriter whose compositions produced hits for himself and others. His earliest recognition, in fact, came as a songwriter associated with the Brill Building era of Tin Pan Alley in the early '60s. But he soon branched out into recording and performing, and by the early '70s was topping the charts with the self-written singles "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Song Sung Blue."...
