Album Review

European musicians are often overlooked by North American critics, though tenor saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar clearly merits attention. This smoldering quartet session with pianist Torbjörn Gulz, bassist Torbjörn Zetterberg and drummer Jonas Holgersson focuses primarily on the leader's originals. The explosive post-bop vehicle "Hitman" signals the bands take-no-prisoners attitude, while the elegant "Stormen" kicks off with a long, semi-classical piano solo, gradually adding the rhythm section with the leader finally coming on board by announcing its loping waltz theme at the three-minute mark. The only piece not penned by Kullhammar is Berndt Egarbladh's turbulent "Corny Waltz," a piece that would have fit into the repertoire of any late-'60s hard bop band. Highly recommended.
