Album Review

Leaving the Rankins and Celtic music behind, Jimmy Rankin launched into his solo career with this stunning debut album. This album mixes all sorts of music (folk, rock, country) together with personal, striking lyrics. Dedicated to his deceased brother John Rankin, with whom he played for several years, this collection seems to be about the anger of loss. Joining him on some of the songs is sister Cookie Rankin, and her voice adds a haunting quality to the music. This CD is well produced, and the core band is tight and plays well together. The last Rankins release, 1998's Uprooted, was somewhat of a disappointment. It seems he has spent the three years between releases preparing strong, melodic, truthful songs. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews

Courage, clear eyes, and steady steps.

Jimmy Rankin is revered by many and totally unknown by many, all within his native country of Canada.
This recording shows consistent evidence of a songwriter searching his soul and memory and having a very wide look around. Its depth of field, to borrow a photographic term, is remarkable.
Though often buoyant (not American style buoyancy, ---Jimmy is never 'over the top'), many songs find places that evoke within the listener genuine aching loss. The songs have a register of a long road travelled, and as long yet to go. The styles adopted are worn with absolute comfort and conviction, from east coast ethos of 'family and friends are the core of existance', his Scottish heritage isn't avoided (much traditional mating of acoustic guitar with keyboards and drum), nor is his love of country music or rock and roll. But all styles are at the service of the words, and the words are the right words, with no dross. There is rawness, yet the overall impact is always uniformly graceful and full of love. A superb supporting selection of musicians never clutters the essence of well-crafted song. All is in harmony, a classic recording.
