About Hayley Sales

Providing a distaff version of the easygoing, sun-and-surf folk-rock of Jack Johnson or Ben Harper, Hayley Sales also rates comparison to more musically expansive alternative folkies like Erin McKeown and even Suzanne Vega. The daughter of a recording engineer, Hayley Sales was born in Washington, D.C., and raised near Portland, Oregon. Although Sales taught herself to play piano and guitar starting at the age of eight, she attended a performing arts school in Portland with an eye toward becoming an actress. After stints in local and regional theater companies, Sales moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career in earnest, but health problems necessitated a move back to her parents' home, which at this time was an organic farm growing blueberries on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. She began working with her father, Richard Sales, in his recording studio on the farm, learning the basics of engineering and studio management while writing her own songs. She also developed her vocal talents from studying the techniques of great singers such as Nina Simone, Bilie Holiday, and Judy Garland. After a self-released demo CD, The Drifter, attracted the attention of a management company, Sales signed to Universal in 2006. Sunseed, Sales' first album for Universal, was released in the summer of 2007, featuring production and instrumental work by her father. The record was a success, charting high internationally. Sales also went on to win the award for Best Mainstream Artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. She spent the next three years touring in support of the record alongside acts such as Gavin DeGraw, INXS, Jason Mraz, and Justin Nozuka. In 2010, Sales got to work on her sophomore effort, When the Bird Became a Book. The official video for the album's lead single, "Just Pretend," received over five million views in just a number of weeks after its release. In 2012, Hayley decided to moved back to Los Angeles to refocus on her acting career. She eventually landed an acting role on the television show, Cedar Cove, which required her to move back to Vancouver. However, her focus on music was still strong and she set about writing for her third album. Shortly after landing the Cedar Cove role, her contract with Universal ended and the young creative set about raising funds for the recording process through Pledge Music. She was then signed to Verve in late 2015 and spent all of 2016 completing the record. The album was released in early 2017 and was once again co-produced by her father. ~ Stewart Mason
