Get Hurt (Deluxe Version)

Get Hurt (Deluxe Version)

Following the overwhelming success of his outfit’s 2010 effort Handwritten, intrepid Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon changes direction yet again. On Get Hurt, the New Jersey rock fivesome refine their approach by further leaving behind the gritty textures and punk-like verve of their early releases for sumptuous arrangements and mood-driven slow burns. While there are intermittent flashes of the uptempo (the roaring “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” and “Helter Skeleton”), much of Get Hurt finds Fallon milking long crescendos to masterly effect, as he does on the haunting title track and the organ-spiked, National-indebted simmer of “Underneath the Ground.” Still, few moments are quite as powerful as the coda of “Dark Places,” a starlit anthem that finds Fallon taking on familiar shades of Springsteen amid curtains of ringing guitars.
