Album Review

Pianist Joe Bonner made a series of rewarding sets for the Danish SteepleChase label during 1979-88 without achieving all that much fame, despite his talent. This set teams the modal-oriented Bonner with vibraphonist Khan Jamal, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Leroy Lowe for six of his diverse originals, all of which display passion (either overtly or inwardly). Although the songs fit together well as a suite, they also stand alone as fine individual pieces, and the interplay between Bonner and Jamal gives this fine date its own personality.
