iTunes Review

Gordon Lightfoot turned from Canadian folksinger to an FM soft-rock staple as the ‘70s progressed. The success of songs such as “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown,” and “Carefree Highway” brought Lightfoot into the mainstream. His record company, wishing to capitalize on that success, looked to issue a “Greatest Hits” collection, and so Lightfoot agreed to re-record his earlier material for the album. What it provides is a pleasant way to experience the more “mature” Lightfoot. His voice has smoothed and calmed in places, any angst replaced by an adult confidence that’s made Lightfoot a master singer/songwriter and professional entertainer. One of the biggest hits of his career, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” was still a year away, and can be found on the extremely rewarding Summertime Dream collection.

National Treasure

Gordon Lightfoot is one of the greatest folk/pop songwriters ever. The pain, joy, melancholy, melodrama, irony and history in his everyman lyrics combine with simple but elegant melody and chord structure to make his music both contemporary and timeless.

Yes, he like Neil Young and Bob Dylan have imperfect voices. But in the case of all three of these musical poets, the evocative power and universal humanity of their masterworks make listening to their artistry one of life's pleasures.

Not many ancient or contemporary performers can craft lyrics that touch deep into your soul and marry them with tunes you will always remember.

Sure, on this album some songs are better than others. But they are all Gord's Gold.

Not What I Would Pick .....

This is a watered down 'best of' that is not very engaging for those wishing to obtain the very best this singer/songwriter had to offer, during the EARLY YEARS of his career. The re-records of his early material are, quite frankly, painful to listen to. If you want the unique flavor that only original recordings can offer, I strongly suggest you add "The United Artists Collection" to your collection !

One of the leading singer/songwriters of the 1960s and '70s, Gordon Lightfoot was Canada's most successful contemporary folk artist, establishing himself as an important songwriter in the mid-'60s and going on to become a major international recording star in the following decade. Lightfoot's songs are literate but down to earth, and deal with personal matters as well as global issues in a manner that's poetic yet accessible, and his rich, strong voice is a superb vehicle for his material, though...
