iTunes Review

XO begins like the three albums before it—with a minimal guitar figure and Smith's delicate vocals. Then it does something different: it explodes with drums, cello, and piano, setting the tone for the indie icon's most sonically ambitious recording to date. Lushly arranged, these songs are some of Smith's most vibrant. "Waltz, No. 2 (XO)" feels like an Irish drinking tune, while "Baby Britain" channels The Beach Boys and "Amity" is pure driving rock. It's the perfect marriage of intimate songwriting and nuanced production.

only the best

when it comes to mellow acoustic music, you cant get any better than elliot smith. His style seems to me to be unbeatable

This is one of the most gorgeous and life changing albums I have ever owned or heard. With his eerie and passionate vocals floating over the beautiful instrumentals, Elliott Smith proves that he deserves to be deemed one of the greatest artists of all time.

A sad lion in the sun - beautiful and tragic

Elliott Smith was perhaps the greatest singer songwriter who ever lived. XO sees him at the height of his powers. Whether its the gorgeous Beatles melodies or the crafted, intimate Sylvia Plath like lyrics, all artists should stop what they are doing and just listen - in awe.

Oh Well, Ok is almost Godlike. Beginning with a Lennonesque imagine motif on the keyboard, the song wastes no time in going for the jugular, gradually building and ending in a golden cascade of sound and plaintive lyrics. The song perfectly encapsulates Elliott Smiths gift - epic treatments of the personal and the intimate.

Overall, his music beautifully expresses the human condition; full of beauty, joy, but also pain, loss, and failure.
