Album Review

The 2011 box set Original Album Classics rounds up the softer side of Alice in Chains: Jar of Flies, Sap, and MTV Unplugged. All three albums are packaged as mini-LPs in paper sleeves and the set is available at an affordable price, making it a nice bargain even if it misses such big AIC titles as Dirt.

Sony Cash In?

Sure grunge is in vogue these days but does Sony really think a 'best of' is going to be the best way to introduce people the the magic that was AIC? While this is a nice comprehensive look at the band's history prior to the newest revamp it fails to recognize that each song on an album was part of a larger whole. Buy this if you're interested in learning about this fantastic band but be aware that you'll need to buy the entire albums to truly know the genius.

agree with @jaytothekay

AIC was my favourite band in the mid to late 90's. The other review 'sony cash in?' is very accurate. i don't usually talk like this, but you need to listen to the whole albums to further appreciate the individual songs. 'Jar of Flies' for example, listening to rotten apples, nutshell, etc will make the song no excuses sound even better. And then you realize what a great talent was lost to drug addiction. I have my critisisms of some AIC songwriting, but I urge people new to AIC to listen to their original albums, a couple of songs from Last Action Hero soundtrack are good, I'm now rambling bye!

AIC Magic

I can understand what the others are saying, but this is still a nice little AIC compilation to have on my iPhone.

In many ways, Alice in Chains was the definitive heavy metal band of the early '90s. Drawing equally from the heavy riffing of post-Van Halen metal and the gloomy strains of post-punk, the band developed a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding hard rock with subtly textured acoustic numbers. They were hard enough for metal fans, yet their dark subject matter and punky attack placed them among the front ranks of the Seattle-based grunge bands. While this dichotomy helped the group soar to...
