Album Review

The first American single-disc Stevie Nicks compilation since 1991's Timespace, Reprise's 2007 Crystal Visions: The Very Best of Stevie Nicks bests that previous set even if it falls just short of being truly definitive. The problem area lies in the place where it clearly attempts to distinguish itself from its predecessor: the inclusion of Fleetwood Mac songs. Where Timespace never attempted to explore this territory, Crystal Visions does, but with the exception of "Silver Springs," all of the Mac songs are re-recordings — "Dreams" is performed with Deep Dish, there's a live version of "Rhiannon," and a version of "Landslide" performed live with the Melbourne Symphony. None of these is necessarily bad, but it's hard not to wish that the original versions of these hits were alongside the original versions of "Edge of Seventeen," "I Can't Wait," "Stand Back," "Talk to Me," "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," and "Leather and Lace," since that would have resulted in a perfect Nicks retrospective. With the live versions, this merely becomes a near-perfect compilation, representing the scope and range of Nicks' career, as a solo artist, as a member of Fleetwood Mac, and as a duet partner. The big songs from all of her career are here, along with some sharply chosen lesser-known tunes — including a live version of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" and "Sorcerer" — that, along with good annotation by Nicks (and in the case of the deluxe edition, a DVD of 13 of her videos), help paint a full portrait of Nicks' career so well that it makes it all the more obvious that this compilation needs the originals of the Mac songs to be perfect, but as it stands, Crystal Visions is very good (indeed, it's the best Nicks retrospective assembled to date).

Nicks doesn't disappoint!

Once again, Nicks doesn't disappoint! The combination of her solo hits along with her hits with Fleetwood Mac, which are presented in a different light by recording them LIVE in concert or re-recording them with new vocals like "Dreams" (with Deep Dish), make this a really diverse stand-out and very different "best of" set covering her entire career. I just love the live tracks she's included! Stand out track for me is the live "Rock and Roll". Stevie does zepplin justice!! Another stand-out recording is Edge of Seventeen with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra... over 9 minutes of pure heaven!! Stand Back (live) is an itunes bonus that you won't find anywhere else but here - and is also really great. Makes me think... We NEED A LIVE ALBUM FROM THIS WOMAN! The two videos included with this give you a preview of the cd/dvd package that includes all her hit videos. You can watch them with or without the commentary by Stevie... Seeing Stand Back (scarlett version) which was never issued and re-shot is a bonus too. Plus, if that weren't enough, the inclusion of the Bella Donna recording sessions is spectacular!!... It's never before seen footage of in the studio recording. Songs from Bella Donna are played through out during photo shoots and other candid moments... This was well worth the wait and I think Crystal Visions is one of the best things Stevie has ever released. Just a great combination of music from one of musics true originals.... Rock on Gold Dust Woman!!

A Must for Stevie Nicks Fans

I love this album! Stevie is at her best in the live performances. And the videos are great, especially the Stand Back video for which Stevie provides a very funny narrative of how it got made. I would definitely recommned this album.

Stevie Nicks execellent

She's not fleetwood, but on her own, she's excellent, one thing that makes fleetwood is her voice, on her own makes it even better. STILL LOVE FLEETWOOD!!!!

Famed for her mystical chanteuse image, singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks enjoyed phenomenal success not only as a solo artist but also as a key member of Fleetwood Mac. Stephanie Lynn Nicks was born May 26, 1948, in Phoenix, Arizona; the granddaughter of a frustrated country singer, she began performing at the age of four, and occasionally sang at the tavern owned by her parents. Nicks started writing songs in her midteens, and joined her first group, the Changing Times, while attending high school...
