Will.i.am’s musical explorations and Fergie’s dance floor-ready wail remain front and centre, but The Black Eyed Peas’ sixth album adds a chilled-out vibe to their globally minded hip-pop. “The Time (Dirty Bit)” combines the Dirty Dancing floor-filler “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” with bouncing-ball synths; “Fashion Beats” rides a smeary Chic sample and Fergie’s croon; and the pulsing, anthemic “Someday” coasts on apl.de.ap’s up-from-nothing boasts. Even when they luxuriate in mellowness, The Beginning shows the Peas at the peak of their power.
