Album Review

All of Scott Joplin's rags (other than his collaborations, which are on a different and complementary disc) are on this two-CD set. Pianist William Albright, a virtuoso, sometimes puts in some surprising tempo changes and mood variations but otherwise performs the 34 Joplin rags as written. The music is performed in the same approximate order in which they were composed (which sometimes differs from when it was published) and includes "Maple Leaf Rag," "The Easy Winners," "The Entertainer," "Elite Syncopations," "The Ragtime Dance," "Pine Apple Rag," "Euphonic Sounds," "Solace," and the posthumously published "Swan Rag." Wonderful music.
