Made over three nights at the Maiden Voyage club in Los Angeles, these anthologized recordings feature alto sax great Art Pepper in summer 1981, roughly a year before his death. His playing is still strong, and there’s a playful spark in his interplay with pianist George Cables (in top form), bassist David Williams, and drummer Carl Burnett. The opening “Donna Lee” is hyper-fast; the rest ranges from the Latin-tinged “Mambo Koyama” to the breezily modern swing of “For Freddie.”
