Editors’ Notes

Texas metalcore outfit Memphis May Fire retools its sound on its sophomore album, The Hollow in favor of a sobered tone and a heightened ferocity. The band seems out for blood, directing its volcanic rage both outward and inward. MMF’s sharpened spiritual focus is unmistakable — from “The Sinner” onwards, mankind’s helplessness and need for redemption is a recurring theme here. Alternating screamo and clean vocal passages maintain a sustained tension as volleys of punishing guitar riffs and eruptions of blast beats form a dense mesh of sound. Auto-Tuned singing and programmed drumming add unexpected touches, with “The Burden” sounding like an ambient industrial piece. But those who savor the barely-controlled savagery of prime metalcore will find plenty to like in tracks like “The Deceived,” “The Haunted” and “The Reality.” Kellen McGregor’s hellish snarls combine with Matty Mullins’ soaring testimony give life to the songs’ torment-filled lyrics. Emerging from the betrayal and self-hatred heard on The Hollow is the promise of transcendence.

Customer Reviews

Best album this year so far, a step up from there previous stuff. A must have for anyone digging something heavy.

Memphis Oh.. Memphis

To start, this is the best metal album of 2011 so far and a massive accomplishment for the band. Rise Records should be especially proud. The whole feel of the album is quite different to any other metal album I've listened to but this is excellent as it sets them apart from other bands. Everything on the album has been put to perfection. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!! Vocals are very well done and Matty delivers in every sense aswell as every musical note of every instrument fits absolutely perfect. I gave every song 5 stars on this album apart from "The Burden" because in my eyes it was just to fill up space but it gels with the album and wraps it up nicely (it is not the last song). Well what can I say listen to a song, see if you like them and then to buy the whole album it's a no brainer. P.S. I listened to them while making this review and I am getting some merch in no time. Stoked to see what you come out with next.
