iTunes Review

Unquestionably the most popular hip-hop group to come out of Australia (where they released the country's first platinum-selling rap album), Hilltop Hoods have been around since the early '90s and dropped their first EP in '97. Though they're relatively unknown in the States, they're huge in their homeland, having released a half-dozen excellent full-lengths between 1999 and 2010. Avoiding fake gangsta clichés, they instead focus on razor-sharp lyricism, rock-solid beats, actual vinyl scratching, and highly musical production via both samples and live instrumentation. (Their project The Hard Road: Restrung features accompaniment from a full symphony orchestra.) State of the Art overflows with impressive wordplay and ear-tickling tracks. Their style is clearly influenced by rap's golden era, but it never falls into corny/retro territory; it recalls the good old days without aping outdated styles. Check out "Parade of the Dead," "Recapturing the Vibe," and "Classic Example," featuring Pharoahe Monch.

I am very impressed with these guys. I knew the next album would be very good but i this album exceded all my expectations. Recomended for everyone!

Absolutely brilliant

Great 2nd album that I'm liking more than the first. These guys really are defining a new kind of hip hop. Awesome stuff!

While inspired by American conscious rap icons like Public Enemy and KRS-One, Hilltop Hoods took their name from the Hilltop, the nickname given the suburb where Suffa and Pressure were raised. Their debut EP, Back Once Again, appeared in 1997, and two years later the trio issued their first full-length...
