A Matter of Taste?

This album is VERY good, but it IS a matter of taste (and, no, it is not karaoke). These are classic songs (think Sinatra), done by Brian Wilson (think Beach Boys). Given his age, Wilson is in fine voice here, and his interpretation is certainly worth a listen, but whether or not you enjoy this will depend upon two things: do you appreciate the source material and, if you do, are you open to a "younger" generation's interpretation? I can only imagine the reaction had this album been released 40 years ago.

In short, if your favorite Beach Boys album is Pet Sounds, and you love American standards, this is probably the album for you.

One giant of American song interprets another: 4.5 stars

Brian Wilson infuses Gershwin's oeuvre with hallmark flourishes of his genius and renders a joyous confection. 'Reimagines' is a lovingly crafted potpourri that cajoles the classic material into a dreamy, gently psychedelic California state of mind. It's the end of a long afternoon and Gershwin is bathed in warm sunlight. There's nowhere to go and nothing to do but feel the breeze in our hair.

Gershwin Comeback

how can you really give a review when you only have 30 seconds per song? I mean come on, anyways, it's not bad, #11 & #13 sounds a bit like the old Beach Boys. For the most part though the music is great maybe if they had another singer it would have been better.

Brian Wilson is arguably the greatest American composer of popular music in the rock era. Born and raised in Hawthorne, California, he formed the Beach Boys in 1961 alongside his two younger brothers, cousin Mike Love, and school friend Alan Jardine. Serving as the group's primary songwriter, Wilson combined the rock urgency of Chuck Berry with the harmonies of the Four Freshmen before expanding his musical imagination during the late '60s, during which time he experimented with new songwriting structures...
