Album Review

For this outing by Quest (which is comprised of David Liebman on soprano and flute, pianist Richard Beirach, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart), the quartet performs three originals apiece by Beirach and Liebman, of which the pianist's "Pendulum" is probably best known. The compositions are complex yet open, and the improvising is dynamic and of the highest quality. The musicians communicate very quickly with each other, and the music unfolds logically but unpredictably. This is the type of recording that demands several listenings in order to fully appreciate; a great deal of inventive music takes place. Recommended.
