Mexican La Castañeda became one of the most alternative numbers in the local rock scene by the end of the 1990s, mainly playing songs based on profound thoughts about erratic human behaviors and madness. Rock en Español: Lo Mejor de La Castañeda comprised 19 of their best songs, including "Tumba Matiz," goth rock "La Fiebre de Norma," mid-tempo "Gitano de Mente," Latin ska "La Espina" and "La Güera," heavy metal "Tloque-Nahuaque," and pop/rock "Cautivo de la Calle." "El Loco," "Ángel de las Sombras," and "La Transfusión" emerge as the darkest and most captivating songs.

Taking its name from a psychiatric hospital in Mexico City, la Castañeda emerged in the early '90s, debuting with an independent album called Servicios Generales before signing up to BMG's Culebra, issuing Servicios Generales II in 1993, internationally released by BMG/Ariola a year later. The band led by singer Salvador Moreno used to perform its deep and obscure songs in dark environments, creating the ideal atmosphere for its Latin alternative pop/rock style.
