Album Review

Never known for their originality, Nosferatu was still one of the strongest bands in the goth scene if for nothing else but their solid songwriting. Still going strong after years of dedication to the genre, the band celebrated their eighth year in the recording industry by putting together The Best of Nosferatu, Vol. 1. The music here actually starts after 1995, leaving three full albums and a handful of singles and tapes off of the compilation. Still, there is a lot here to be proud of. Songs like "Witching Hour," "Tortuous," and "Ascension" are high points in the genre. The band's success hinges on an unbreakable formula for good goth music: mix the punk guitar of bands like Generation X, lush synth pop keyboards, the rock-solid drumming of Rat Scabies, and the deep voice of Dominic LaVey (who channels Peter Murphy so strongly that it is genuinely hard to tell the difference at times). It may be derivative of their biggest influences, but who really cares when the music is still good? The album includes most of their best music from this period, save "The Haunting," which is available as a bonus music video but somehow does not make it onto the actual album. A few of the mixes sound off; for example, the vocal in the "The Night Is Young (Manic Mix)" sounds awful as it is turned up too loud, fuzzing up the whole song. Still, this is the most extreme case of any of the songs, and the album is still quite good despite that problem. Goth fans who do not have these songs should make this essential to their collection, and any curious listeners who would like to experience the goth genre should check in here for a high-quality example of the music.

Although goth rock experienced its heyday in the early to mid-'80s, new bands would occasionally pop up to keep the flame burning, and the British band Nosferatu was one such group. Formed in the late '80s by guitarist Damien DeVille, the group debuted on vinyl in 1990 on a compilation with a track called "Bloodlust." In 1991, they recorded an EP titled The Hellhound featuring vocalist Louis De Wray and bassist Vlad Janicek. At the end of 1992, Cleopatra sent the Sex Gang Children's Dave Roberts...
