iTunes Review

Alexi Murdoch is a folk singer of great power. Born in London and raised throughout Europe before attending school in North Carolina, the troubadour recorded Towards the Sun mostly in one night in Vancouver while on tour, before finishing things up in New York with Jon Natchez and Kelly Pratt of Beirut and Kyle Resnick of the National. Murdoch’s voice and impressive fingerpicking will no doubt remind listeners of Nick Drake. Even the vocal breaks in gorgeous tunes like “Slow Revolution” and “At Your Door” are reminiscent of Drake’s elusive somber beauty. This is music kept close to the earth with a few ambient arrangements to spread the atmosphere (“Through the Dark”). It’s timeless and could have been made thirty to fifty to 100 years ago. Every track excels. The title track, “The Light (Her Hands Were Leaves)” and “Some Day Soon” are immediate highlights. But it’s obvious that there is great depth here, plus an honesty that will ensure these tunes grow over the long haul.

Amazing Live!

I just went to Alexi Murdoch's show in Vancouver.... absolutely amazing! He is wonderful live, as he is on his albums, great voice, great passion, wonderful music. Buy his music, and go to his shows you won't regret it.

I first heard Alexi Murdoch when i watched the movie "AWY WE GO "...., his music is played throughout ....ITS FANTASTIC.......THE MUSIC AND THE MOVIE......BUY THEM BOTH !.... also,.......listen to Mark Kozelek...SUN KIL will thank me later !

tender and honest

Alexi's vocals reach right into my being and touch my soul. His music is without pretension; stripped down to very minimum. Just an acoustic guitar and a voice that brings instant tears to my eyes. "Towards the Sun" lacks the depth of "Time Without Consequence" and I was hoping for a full CD of songs instead of just these 7 simple songs (including a couple from the soundtrack of "Away We Go"). It's a testament to the artist that I bought this latest selection without hesitation. It will be too frugal for some and too forlorn for others - but this is the music that will be playing in my heaven.

Born: London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

In late 2003, things picked up rapidly and a bit weirdly for folkie Alexi Murdoch. Moving to balmy Los Angeles from Scotland in the late '90s, Murdoch let the sleepy, weepy U.K. folk sound seep into indie and lo-fi influences. But he never did much with his music beyond some local gigs, he worried about damaging his personal attachment to the songs. That was until September 2003, when Murdoch appeared on Nic Harcourt's tastemaking Morning Becomes Eclectic show on the L.A. public radio outlet KCRW....
