Album Review

Canadian country singer Dean Brody sounds positively all-American on his self-titled 2009 debut. He has a dry, dusty sensibility that recalls Brad Paisley only without Paisley's ripping guitar and weakness for novelties. Which isn't to say Brody doesn't have a sense of humor: he serves up a clever pun on "Dirt Roads Scholar," marrying it to an insistent country-rock pulse that manages to feel simultaneously traditional and modern. Brody's strength is that he walks this line with a bit of grace, only occasionally straying toward anonymous crossover country-pop. The strident power ballad "Brothers" being the biggest offender in this regard, but the sweet, breezy "Lazy Days" shows that he can have a gentle touch, while "This Ain't the Same Town" shows that he can do a gritty honky tonk crawl with the best of them. And it's that ability to put a bit of dirt in his country, along with his lean, efficient songwriting (he writes six of the 11 songs here, co-writing three others), that makes Dean Brody a fresh, engaging debut.

Great Debut

Wow, fantastic album. Dean's got one of those true down home country voices which reminds me of some older country music and the days back on the farm! I finally get to hear some country music that doesn't sound so pop/rock like, his traditional country sound is absolutely awesome. I can't wait to hear more from this guy. I scooped up this album the first time I heard it without hesitation. Love the country down home feel to the album!

Not a Bad Song

I heard him on Highway 16 on XM and he played Dirt road scholar and thought thats the same guy that does Brothers and is a fellow CDN. I decided to download the whole album. I am on the 6th song and what a voice I will try and see him live

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Canadian country singer and songwriter Dean Brody grew up on the edge of the Canadian Rockies in Jaffray, British Columbia, spending a formative rural childhood hunting, fishing, splitting firewood, playing sports, and participating in the local 4-H. But he also played guitar and wrote songs and determined early that he wanted a career in music. Life puts you where it puts you, though, and when he was 16, Brody, like most every other boy in the area, started working at the sawmill. The job convinced...
