Editors’ Notes

Naughty By Nature’s “O.P.P.” was the quintessential rap crossover of its time; its lascivious hook is impossible not to shout along to. But don’t be fooled by the bright-eyed Michael Jackson and Beatles samples. The New Jersey trio’s self-titled 1991 debut strikes a fine balance between pop and street. "Guard Your Grill" sets threats to a piano-infused break, and "Uptown Anthem" turns a rumble into a call-and-response chant. For every earworm melody, Treach has gritty, deeply personal bars, as on the gut-wrenching but hopeful “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.”
