iTunes Review

No other band creates symphonic textures quite like Sigur Rós. The Icelandic group uses the entire dynamic range to slowly unfurl its best melodic moments. With bandleader Jónsi also pursuing a more song-oriented solo career, Sigur Rós can better focus on creating atmospherics and epic land- and spacescapes that alter a room's mood. The band's ambience is first-rate and a mystery worth leaving; there's no need to pull apart the reasons for why this music works. It simply does. There are traces of conventional songcraft in tunes such as "Eg Anda," "Ekki Mukk," and "Dauoalogn," but the general forces behind the music are notes that linger in space and melt with chords that float between the strings and piano. No cover band could reproduce this music; it's a singular achievement that deserves wonder and praise. Others with laptops and effect boards may create their own version of this approach, but it's a great thrill to hear it from the source.

Sigur Ros has always served us well.
They needed this. A change of pace. They have being playing upbeat festive music for a long time now, and if this is what they need right now, then so be it. They will always make beautiful art. Whoever says they are "holding back", is lying to us. True artists make albums for what they need to hear, not for what we need to hear. If you don't like it, then listening to their old music! They could have easily created an upbeat post rock album, but they decided to go with this beautiful shoegaze experiment, so be glad in it.

Well done. SO well done.

Gorgeous album as always, sweeping melody that puts you in wonderous mood. No drugs needed. lol ENJOY.

A stronger ambient feel than past efforts.

It's hard but also unreasonable to compare any album by this group to their Ágætis byrjun album, it was monumental. This band has evolved and I liken this album to a cross between () and Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. It takes a number of listens to fully appreciate the breadth and depth of their sound, and those long drawn out bass sounds from previous albums has made a welcome return.

Named in part after a sister of one of the bandmembers, Reykjavik, Iceland's Sigur Rós (Victory Rose) was formed by guitarist and vocalist Jón Þór Birgisson (who later went by the name Jónsi), bassist Georg Holm, and drummer Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson. Formed in early 1994 while the members were teenagers, the trio's first recorded song earned them a deal with Iceland's Bad Taste label. Their sprawling debut LP, Von (Hope), was released in 1997, followed the next year by a collection of remixes from that...
