A different kind of Wow

Okay, it wasn't what I expected. I was expecting a generic pop album. It's not. Yes, there are a few radio friendly songs on it: the current single "Down In Heaven","Destination (Where I Belong" and "Walk On Home." I am impartial to "Walk On Home"; with lyrics such as "my pride's still lying on the bathroom floor/ In a pile of sticks and stones", you realize that Porter isn't awake in a dream anymore. There's clever songs on the album such as "Hurray", a sardonic vent on living in the spotlight, and "Karma King", a nightmarish fable about a golden boy of sorts who's turfed from his throne, another testament to the perils of fame. "Try" is heavily Beatles-influenced both in sound and lyrically: a cool retro piece which is sweet in its optimism that "love is the answer", especially in the midst of alienation. Then there's the songs that pay homage to Porter's musical background and training such as "Run Run Run", "Beauty" and "One Last Try" which allow him to use the full range of his voice to create subtle beautiful pieces, appreciated by those with more refined tastes. The last song "Out Of My Head" is a simple, moving song, both lyrically and in performance and is a fitting close to the album. Kalan Porter has matured both personally and musically. There is not an album like this out there right now, at least not in mainstream pop.

This album just gets better with each listen. It's deep and full of raw emotion. You'll want to definately play this with your headphones on so you can really hear the quality in his voice and the mastery of his violin playing. Every single song is a gem. The songs are open to personal interpretation which is the sign of great writing. Awesome sophmore release Mr. Porter.

Kalan's baby!

From the dark, stressful times he and his family have been through in the past 2 years, Kalan's managed to create a masterpiece CD straight from his heart and soul.
