Album Review

Josh Thompson first received attention as the professional songwriter who penned the title track for Jason Michael Carroll’s second album, Growing Up Is Getting Old, so it’s not entirely a surprise that Thompson’s 2010 debut, Way Out Here, is cut from the same nostalgic cloth as Growing Up, containing paeans to small towns ruled by John Wayne, Johnny Cash, and John Deere, and laying all blame at the feet of Waylon Jennings. Clearly, with all this name-dropping — and that’s only the tip of the iceberg, as there’s lovemaking to Haggard cassettes — Thompson intends to have some outlaw dust rub off on his shoulders, and he does keep things pretty lean even if Thompson seems a little bit too clean to be rowdy. Nevertheless, he’s a good craftsman — “Beer on the Table” not only kicks, it has a couple of sly lyrical phrases, and he has a nice, gentle touch with the ballads. Though his essential sweetness can be ingratiating, the singles are the kind that gain strength with repetition.

Josh Thompson's Debut Album

Discovered these guys with "Way Out Here" and later on "Beer on the Table". It wasn't until I saw them in Toronto that I realized the talent these guys have. Since then I've purchased the rest of the album and wasn't disappointed, only ten songs but at least there is no extra's thrown in to fill out a track list. All 10 songs contain something unique on this album showing that a country album can have some diversity in it. Great album, definitely a must check out!

i first heard "way out here" and fell in love ! i found the rest of his album equally amazing. i love every single song on this album , and i can't say that about any other album . this is definetly worth checking out , you won't be disapointed !

Check this guy out!

Came across Josh's video for "Blame it on Waylon" and became an instant fan. I think Josh is one of the best country guys around. And I hope he gets lots of radio support b/c i'm sure he'll have lots of fan support. Check this guy out, he's got a really good voice, real country style and he's a good writer. He deserves to go far.

Country songwriter Josh Thompson kicked off his career in 2009, when he released his first single, "Beer on the Table," and co-authored a song for Jason Michael Carroll’s Top Ten album Growing Up Is Getting Old. A native of western Wisconsin, Thompson began pouring concrete alongside his father at the age of 12, and a sense of blue-collar pride soon found its way into his music. He moved to Nashville in 2005, assembled a band, and received a boost when Columbia Records signed him to the label’s country...
