manic, theatrically charged...

Rock and roll without narcissism is akin to Mick sans Keith: It feels incomplete. And what's more, to be blunt, it's boring. Fortunately, Toronto's R. Kelly Clipperton - the main man behind the black and blue bawdy burlesque of Kelly And The Kellygirls - is anything but. The former Merkury Burn magnate and media jack of all trades - though no stranger to the cycle of smug self-absorption (as the title suggests) - takes care (unlike so many) to look beyond the mirror towards creative profundity on his careening, strut-centric sophomore effort, We Love You, But Not As Much As We Love Ourselves: a manic, theatrically charged paean to the crash and burn of desire in all its messy glory. In a modern twist of mischievous revelry, Clipperton, whose voice fiendishly croaks somewhere between Peter Murphy and Tim Curry, at times channels Ian Dury in sheer sweat-soaked bluster if not precise sonic gusto: Like the ever inclusive Blockheads, the band "celebrate ferociously" and create both a joyous and painful rumble, its subversive, ska-tinged swinging showstoppers soaring sky-high one second, only to wallow in the gutter with bitter bravado the next. One of my favourite CDs...
