Album Review

As time goes by, Drivin' N Cryin' keep evolving into the heirs to the Southern rock throne. Smoke, while not as impressive or original as previous efforts, offers some crunching rock, but it really shines during the country-tinged acoustic numbers "What Difference Does it Make" and "When You Come Back."

Cracklin' Good Southern Fried Rock

Listeners of Drivin' N' Cryin' were no doubt confused by DRIVE. Those who were loyal followers of the band would be surprised at the straight forward, balls out guitar oriented wall of sound that SMOKE is. New listeners of the band who started out with SMOKE (like me) would be perplexed by finding so many acoustic songs in the rest of the band's catalogue.Personally as a hard rock fan, I find SMOKE very appealing. It may have been that Kevn Kinney dedicated many of his acoustic songs at this time to his solo album, but SMOKE is pretty much a hard rocking southern tinged burner. I especially find the first track, Back Against the Wall, and the last track, Turn It Up or Turn It Of, to be well crafted riff monsters, which after 2-3 listeners are nearly impossible not to sing along with. Good stuff if you like the genre. This band should be bigger and better known.

The band followed...
