Wish You Were Here is Badfinger's Abbey Road

In the Summer of 1969 The Beatles were barely functioning as a band. Yet somehow they came together one last time and created a masterpiece. In 1974 Badfinger was plagued with management problems and a few personnel issues. The band channeled its energy and the stress of the ongoing problems into its songwriting and created its masterpiece. Sadly, the album was pulled from the stores by Warner soon after its release because of legal and financial disputes and this classic never received the airplay or promotion it truly deserved. Simply put, "Wish You Were Here" is one of the best albums ever recorded. Album producer Chris Thomas had much to work with and he went all out. The sound is crisp, clear and yet powerful. All 4 of the band members contributed songs and each of the 9 songs is excellent. Many delve into the frustration they were feeling with the music industry, the band's management and with each other. In 1969 McCartney wrote "You Never Give Me Your Money". Badfinger's predicament is evident in "Just A Chance", "Gotta Get Out Of Here" and "King Of The Load (T)". Abbey Road side 2's string of songs is hinted at with the seamless connection of two songs in both "In The Meantime/Some Other Time" and "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch/Should I Smoke". The Ham classic "Dennis" consists of 3 unique songs strung together into one and its lyrics are both intriguing and symbolic. The whole album flows so well that it seems to be over soon after it started. And, what an ending: The last 30 seconds of the last song has one of the best guitar (with piano) solos ever recorded. "Wish You Were Here" has stood the test of repeated listenings and new listeners will agree with Badfinger fans that it is truly Badfinger's masterpiece.

Formed: 1968 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

There are few bands in the annals of rock music as star-crossed in their history as Badfinger. Pegged as one of the most promising British groups of the late '60s and the one world-class talent ever signed to the Beatles' Apple Records label that remained with the label, Badfinger enjoyed the kind of success in England and America that most other bands could only envy. Yet a string of memorable hit singles -- "Come and Get It," "No Matter What," "Day After Day," and "Baby Blue" -- saw almost no reward...
