Album Review

Liverpool's A Flock of Seagulls are best remembered for lead singer Mike Score's hair (and their number ten hit "I Ran [So Far Away]"). The quartet actually scored three lesser hits aside from that archetypal '80s smash. The kinetic "A Space Age Love Song"; the cascading, multi-layered "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)"; and the sweeping "The More You Live, the More You Love" are also included here. The set is fleshed out with non-hits and album cuts that most listeners will find pleasant but unessential (although the neurotic "Nightmares" is quite fun). It's an interesting curio from synth-rock's heyday and all the Flock of Seagulls that anyone aside from ardent fans or '80s junkies needs.

Even a visit to the bands website will say, buy another album. These are not the original songs. What happened was 25 years after the original recording, a record company lured one of the four members back into a studio to "re-record" and "punch-up" the originals with some new rifts. According to the bands own website the songs below are all worked from these additional vocals, music and rifts. The guys voice is now shot and the recording took a grand (vice) total of 2 days. Buy the original and give this a very wide berth, you can hear the difference in the i-tunes sample.

It gets one star because zero is not an option. The review at the top (from AllMusicGuide) does not even apply to this CD as you can tell from the fact that there are only 8 songs here (and 5 remixes) not the 16 mentioned in the review. This is not in fact the Music Club CD but the Direct Source CD which AMG gives an approrpriately bad review. It's a shame that this version is available in iTunes Plus and not the real version but don't get drawn in by that. Sample some of the tracks and you can hear that they are not the originals. They sound like karaoke versions. So give this one a wide berth. In fact it should be dropped from the iTunes store. At the very least they need to match it up with the correct review from AllMusicGuide.

it is not the original sounding vocals.. they sound horrible.. something you'd hear at a cheesy karaoke bar

As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single "I Ran (So Far Away)," A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous one-hit wonders of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement, A Flock of Seagulls were a little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new romantics, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the short-lived movement. The group benefitted considerably from MTV's heavy rotation of the "I Ran"...
