iTunes Editors' Notes

The Lansing, Mich., metalcore quintet Wasted Youth unveils a fourth studio album—its first on Artery Recordings and its first with Dylan Shippey as drummer. 2012’s Wasted Youth marks a departure in the band’s all-or-nothing approach to metalcore. After a brutal attack in the verse of the opening track, “Hollow,” the song's melodic chorus has more in common with pop-punk than anything resembling metal. But this is a good thing—not only does it make for an interesting yin and yang contrast in songs like the following “Resolvent Feelings,” it adds another tier of structural dynamics as heard on the standout cut “Sober” (which opens with an electro-tinged stutter somewhat similar to The Who’s “Baba O’Riley”). Further duality is perpetuated by lead screamer Dylan Richter and rhythm guitarist Kalan Blehm’s boyishly sung melodies. This is most evident in “When Push Comes to Shove,” where Richter screams his larynx raw over scattered rhythms before Blehm comes in, sounding like he’s auditioning for Blink-182. Old fans might prefer “Always About You,” where Richter handles all microphone duties.
