Album Review

U2 planned to record a new EP before launching the European leg of their ambitious Zoo TV tour in 1993, but the EP quickly turned into the full-length album Zooropa. Picking up where Achtung Baby left off, Zooropa delves heavily into U2's newfound affection for experimental music and dance clubs. While the title track marries those inclinations to the anthems of The Joshua Tree, most of the record is far more daring than its predecessor. While that occasionally means it's unfocused and meandering, it also results in a number of wonderful moments, like the quiet menace of "Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car," and the space-age German disco of "Lemon," the Edge's droning mantra "Numb," and the gentle, heartbroken "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)," one of U2's very best love songs. As the album winds to a close, it drifts off track, yet the best moments of Zooropa rank among U2's most inspired and rewarding music.

Zooropa - Not what you'd expect....it's better

Now I'd been a U2 fan or many years and when this album came out I quickly snatched it up from the local record store. I was pretty dissapointed when first listening to it. Pop-Syth? U2? What were Bono & the boys doing behind those garish outfits & bug eye glasses? After a few weeks of heavy rotation on my stereo, I gave up on this album thinking, well you can't win 'em all. A few years later I re-found this CD, and whether the passage of time stirs good memories or what, this album, has numerous great songs on it. U2 were really trying something new. From the dance floor anthem "Lemon" to the quiet reflective "Dirty Day". U2 even paired up with Johnny Cash on "The Wanderer". The Edge even takes over on "Numb". If you're like me and gave up on this album, give it another try, it will really surprise you!

Amazing U2 Album

This album has not recieved enough credit. It is arguably U2's best album. It is the most artistic expression of music and words that U2 has offered to date. Get it now and listen.

Great Lyrics, Great Songs!!!

At the peak of song writing, the songs might not be as strong as the songs in Achtung, Baby or Joshua Tree but have lyrics that can move anyone! Zooropa, my personal favourite, really talks about how to be great in a tough world. Lemon is one of U2's greatest "getting over love' songs and Stay (Faraway, So Close!) is one of U2's greatest love songs. A must get for all U2 fans!!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the '80s. They were rock & roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal, equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional,...
