Björk: Solstice

By Björk

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

This new holiday version of Björk's Solstice app from Biophilia is based on a poem celebrating the Christmas season by poet / author Sjon, comparing the solar system to a Christmas tree.

At the center of the app is a sun from which the user pulls rays of light to form a circular harp of strings plucked by colorful orbiting planets; tilt the device and the orbital planes turn into the branches of a three-dimensional Christmas tree, the stars becoming snowflakes. In Solstice, Björk plays the “Solstice” song with a specially commissioned pendulum-harp which embodies the idea of gravity that was central to the song’s creation.

Solstice was developed with Max Weisel, creator of the bestselling Soundrop App, and Björk's longtime design collaborators M/M (Paris).

Absolutely Awesome!

When I got my iPad for Christmas, one of the first things I tried to download was Biophilia. I've listened to the album several times, but have wanted to see the app for some time now. But with a 16GB iPad, the free app would take up too much room. Sigh.

So I was thrilled when this app came out. Not only did it let me experience a bit of what Biophilia would be like, it is also beautiful in its own right. Using a solar system as your guide, you create a galexy that makes your own music; it is also the layout for branches of a tree, with the moon (the Winter Soltice is the shortest day and longest night of the year and is usually celebrated around Yule on the 21st) sits atop as a star.

I've really enjoyed using this app and experimenting with music and creating galexies that have a tie to nature. I've enjoyed it so much that now I want to get the actual Biophilia app. Not only do you get to hear a new rendition of the song from the Biophilia album, you even get to create your own.

Bjork: Solstice is absolutely awesome. Really enjoyed this one.

They could have done it much better

Fails as a music app cause the vocals are just too loud and uncontrollable. The multi layer approach i interesting, but the precision required to make them harmonious is approximately impossible.
I kept it for 45 seconds.
