Description

Do you remember the thrill you experienced the first time you saw Jupiter or Saturn through a telescope? If so, Gas Giants is a must for your iOS library!

Gas Giants lets you peer through a simulated telescope to observe Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune and their major moons, as they appear right now, or at any date and time.

Amateur astronomers, teachers, scout leaders, astronomy club members or anyone who uses a telescope or binoculars to view the night sky will love Gas Giants.

Gas Giants requires an iPhone 3GS or later, or an iPod Touch 3rd Generation or later (specifically, OpenGL ES 2.0 or later) to run. All iPad models are supported.

#%*!! ,

Small criticisms

1. The app name displays as "Gas Giants-debug". Not sure what this means or if it is functionally significant. Redownloading doesn't fix.
2. Time slider has no effect for Uranus and Neptune.

Useful but flawed

This is a useful app for amateur astronomers planning their observations -- "hey, which of Jupiter's or Saturn's moons are going to be visible tonight" -- but it has a couple of issues I hope to see resolved in a future update.

First, pinching is extremely slow. Second, on my iPad, the app crashes when you try to select a custom telescope or eyepiece. On the Software Bisque support forums I discovered a fix that worked for me: powering off and restarting the iPad. Apparently the telescope and eyepiece menus (which are huge, and include everything) are just too big.

Support is a problem in that registration at the developer's site is required to do anything, including contacting the developer or even reading posts on the support forum, which strikes me as going to great lengths to avoid getting feedback from users.

Just a great program!

I love using this program when imaging the planets :)
