Ratings and Reviews
One of the only apps you need
Ive been a fruity loops user from day one and this program blows fl studio out of the water.
Ive downloaded many synthesizers and this app contains so many synths with epic sounds you could just have an ipad and Gadget on a desert island and you'd never be bored. Ok. I'll calm down now.
At least put clip fades on Zurich...
Yeah, I love the thing, but the development continues to be an onslaught of mixed genius and full on arrogance. A $15 CAD IAP for a bloody ugly gain fader? Still poor audio implementation on so many levels (ever heard of clip fades, or did Mozart disapprove of those over in Zurich lol?)
If they would just LISTEN to user advice about some really basic stuff, it would be so easy to go that extra star...but given all the annoying idiosyncrasies, and the fact that they LIED when they promised FREE GADGETS to initial adopters...no.
Falls short for Ableton users
I was an early adopter of this app, I have over 4 years of experience with it. I bought it for Ableton export functions, which was one of its main selling features. This app is a fantastic sketch pad and it is easy to hook up my MIDI keyboard via Apple Connection Kit. I love using all the Gadgets and they sound fantastic, even when simply running out of my iPad’s headphone jack.
While it does export a session for both MIDI and audio, Gadget is far from perfect. Audio clips will have significant clips and delays, taking away whatever seamless sequencing you put together in the app. There are painful workarounds using fx and warping once you’re in Ableton, which also completely negates the promise of “seamless workflow” from Korg.
In 2017, Korg suddenly released Gadget for Mac, along with what’s been called “The Gadget Collection”, which includes AU versions of all your gadgets for use in any 64-bit DAW of your choosing. “Finally,” I think, “Now I’m going to get the seamless workflow between Ableton and Gadget.”
Wrong. The only way to obtain The Gadget Collection is to BUY GADGET AGAIN. This time, for my Mac. The price? $300.
Let’s do this math really quick:
Korg Gadget iOS: $40
My chosen “expansion” Gadgets: $20 * 6
Korg Module (includes 5 Gadgets): $40
Total spent: $200
Now... in order to get the true “seamless” functionality I wanted in the first place, I STILL have to buy Gadget for my Mac, bringing my total spend with Korg to $500. That’s ridiculous, considering 1) The prices of MUCH more robust DAWs/sequencers like FL Studio, or even Ableton Live Standard, and 2) Korg does not allow any use of their Gadgets in any other iOS DAW, like Beatmaker, Tabletop, or Cubasis.
I hope Korg can get things together for their Ableton support, or at least let us early adopters use the Gadget Collection on our Macs WITHOUT having to buy a second DAW in full. Until then, it’s only below half an app, and only worth below half my stars.
