Do not get this App

Oskey 2009

This App is very difficult to use. It is not intuitive or user friendly. But the absolute worst part, is that cancelling the App is extremely difficult! After figuring out how to cancel and canceling before the 1 week trial was up , they still charged me! I’m extremely upset! This is exactly how people get used and abused! This App should be shut down. It is fraudulent!

Developer Response

Sorry to hear you had trouble canceling your subscription. The subscription is handled entirely by apple, and therefore all apps with subscriptions in the app store work the same way. If you have specific suggestions on how to make the app easier to use we'd love to hear from you at .

Great resource!

Uses a method based on legitimate linguistics research. Not a gimmick. You will benefit from watching Steve Kaufmann’s YT videos to get background. Interface is not that intuitive but improving. The web version easier to use. If you are serious about language acquisition you should try this.

Update: Gets Better With Use [Good Concepts, Needs Interface Fine-Tuning]

John O'Meara

Having used LingQ for a while I am upgrading my ranking. Overall this is a good app, and the concepts behind it are valuable for language learning. In terms of what offers, it is very ambitious and aims to be comprehensive. It does have a fairly steep learning curve, and I am still getting the hang of some parts; there are parts I haven’t looked at very much. I have figured out some of the things I found puzzling, and have started using the Playlist feature, and now listen while driving.

I do think that if you are serious about language learning this is probably the strongest single app you can find, and it potentially can take you a long way if you are motivated and persistent. I took out a subscription to focus seriously on the one language I am most interested in

[This app is built around key concepts that are the foundation of effective second-language learning, such as use of Spaced Repetition Systems and a focus on comprehension. The app is complex because it has a lot of functions and parts of it seem idiosyncratic at times. For example in some cases opening a card does not automatically trigger an oral version of the word in question but in other cases it does. When reviewing a text that is longer than one screen it is not very obvious how to access the remainder of the next. And sometimes it seemed as if the reviewing mechanisms act as if you hadn’t just reviewed a particular section.

One issue is that the somewhat random nature of the process for selecting texts to review means that you may ending up reviewing and learning low-frequency vocabulary items (such as a bunch of bird names occurring in one story; these are not items of much value to early-stage language learners).

That being said, I am still using LingQ and can see the value of it. To gIve it a higher rating I would have to see improvements. I’m hoping for improvements in the transparency and intuitiveness of the user interface.]

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding audio for words in the review section, this should be working properly. There are some activities which don't play the audio since we don't want to give away the answer before you can respond. If you aren't getting the audio, please check your Review settings to make sure auto audio is turned on for all the different activities that allow it.
To move on to the rest of the lesson, just swipe to page. You can swipe forward or backwards.
The green arrow on each page will review all the yellow LingQs on that page. The yellow Review button in the top right corner will base the review on the SRS algorithm.
With regard to low frequency words, we actually don't recommend reviewing all your words until you know them. Review them occasionally but you should be creating far more Lingqs than you can possibly review. The fact is you do review these LingQs when you re-read the lesson or better yet, see them again in multiple different contexts in new lessons. Only then will you truly learn the meaning of most words and this is a far more efficient way of learning vocabulary. Less important words will not re-occur so you can just not worry about them. Important words will reoccur often and you will quickly learn them.
Use the review activities as a way of breaking up the reading or focusing on a limited amount of vocabulary when at the early stages. It's also a good idea to tag specific types of vocabulary like verb forms and then review these specifically in the Vocabulary section.
Hope this helps! We do need to improve our help in app for sure!
