Loving it: suitable for large jobs as well as small

I want to rave a little bit about this cheap, friendly little app with unadvertised power for large jobs. Here’s my use case: a neglected and many-times-migrated photo archive — 150K images, at least 30K of which are cruft — dupes, thumbnails, etc — from many migrations to new platforms and new DAM apps. I’ve been driven over the last 15 years and at least 8 generations of hardware, from home-grown DAM to Picasa to Aperture to Photos (might have taken a detour along the way through early LR, I don’t recall at this point) and now moving to ON1. At some point the archive lived on a Synology NAS, acquiring all kinds of thumbnail and indexing cruft. So let’s just say this is a Right Old Mess and one I have increasingly dreaded dealing with.

Enter PhotoSweeper. On its first pass through the mess, which took almost 2 hours, it came up with over 30,000 duplicate groups, many with 4 or 5 members (!). Its attempts to decide which images to save and which to dump did not agree with my own assessment — but who has the time to sit and hand-pick 30,000 cases? This is when I discovered the coolest feature of the app. Seriously, this one feature would make it worth twice the price (but don’t tell the devs that!). There’s an Export command in the menus. You can export the entire comparison result as XML packaged as a .plist file (who cares about the extension, it’s XML and very lucid and parseable by eye or by machine).

So I did this. An hour or two of scripting and debugging and testing, and I had a little CLI script that would parse this file and impose *my* rules about which images to save and which to delete. My rules were just a little bit more complex than the Preferences options in Sweeper. After cautious testing and a good solid backup, I let ‘er rip. In just a few minutes, 15 years of digital photo (mis)management were pruned away. And I have the .plist file as the verbose historic record of what was deleted and what was saved. I love this app. I don’t think you could spend a better $14 if you are a photog with a messy old archive to tidy up.

Incredible software, and will work directly on Photos file

Le vraie Francois

My Mac Photos file is 1.5T, over 200,000 photos! This software easily found the duplicates, which helped save a lot of wasted storage space on my drive & on the iCloud. In the digital world, where some of us take many shots, this software is fabulous at comparing photos, and cleaning up. Default settings exist, they are good, having said that it allows you to define criterias as simply, or as specifically as you would like.

Given everything this software does, the price is an absolute bargain! Buy it now, you won’t be disappointed

pretty good

I haven't even started deleting duplicate photo's yet… It took me a while to figure out how to use this app. I could only figure it out after using the help menu, which thankfully had a good description of how to use the app, and each of its features. Now, I think I'm ready to start deleting duplicated photo's! Two suggestions I have:

1) if you look at the screenshot(s) above, you'll see that the "Drag and drop photos to the Box" label is BLOCKING the name and details about the third (right-side) picture. That's very inconvenient when you are trying to compare photos.

2) You will also see that below each of the three pictures, it does not show the file details, such as dimentions, size, date, etc… This information is visable in only the "pairs" view (not the "groups" view or Setup). I prefer the groups view, being able to see all three or four copies of the same pic, but this missing information makes it harder to decide which to put in the box. Please include the specs of the pictures in all views. Thanks!
