Invasive plants, often called weeds, are plants that are not native to British Columbia (BC) and cause lasting environmental and economic harm. Some are toxic, or otherwise harmful to humans or animals. These plants can establish and spread quickly, and outcompete our native vegetation. Eradication and control efforts cost BC taxpayers millions of dollars every year.

The Report-a-Weed BC app lets you report weed sightings anywhere in BC, in just a few simple steps. Your report will go to one of BC's invasive plant specialists, who will coordinate follow-up activities with the appropriate local authorities.
The app can be used off-line to create submissions as well; simply click ‘Submit’ and the report will be sent as soon as you are back in cell coverage. There’s a map of BC that displays the 500 most recent submission details, and you can search through images of all invasive plant species on the list.

Your involvement will help land owners and invasive plant managers in their early detection and rapid response activities, as well as enhance the knowledge of current distribution of established invasive plant species!

Good start

Awesome collection of invasive species and a great start for this app, but there are things lacking, the most significant being a way to get answers to questions you have.

Also needed are not only 'clearer' images (not obscured by their own background) but a way to zoom in on them. On an iPhone screen many are just too tiny to be clear.

It would also help to have a Danger Classification for those plants so toxic they need specialized staff and equipment…and a higher priority reporting level.

I find it difficult to know if I have spotted something bad and common, or benign and merely similar to an invasive. When there are benign species there should be a clear way to compare them for certain identification.

The pinned reported plant names on the maps should be direct clickable to the relevant image.

I am looking forward to feedback from the app developers. Great start with tons of potential. Now let's see if our help is accepted in more than just plant reports. In my experience a great app requires the developers sharing the pride in it, not hoarding it whilst shunning suggestions from users…hope this is an open minded app developer.

Another great concept poorly designed.... the fact that we can't zoom in on the images in order to "see details" renders this app useless.

This app would also benefit from image recognition technology where the user takes a picture of the weed and it is then crossed referenced with the apps photo library. If confirmed as an Invasive, the report button becomes unlocked.

Great Reporting Tool

I think the app works great for what it is designed to do! For someone working in the environmental sector, this is much easier than using the IAPP web based reporting.

For people without invasive plant knowledge or plant identification skills, the Alien Invasive Plant Program website or even google searches of suspect plants will aid in identification. There is also an app called "Aliens Among Us" whose purpose is to inform about alien species. There are also plenty of links in the app itself in the "about" section.
