Description

“The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.”
- Best-selling novelist Michael Marshall Smith

Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop.

Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea.

Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: meticulously outline every last detail first, or hammer out a complete draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are fully integrated with its outlining tools, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a click away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.

Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand, and you can open it right alongside what you’re working on. Write a description based on a photograph. Transcribe an interview. Check for consistency with an earlier chapter.

Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, compile everything into a single document for printing, create an e-book, or export to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy.

Scrivener’s users include best-selling novelists, screenwriters, students, academics, lawyers, journalists and translators. It won’t tell you how to write - it just provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing.

any humanities grad students/early stage academics, this is my recommendation to you

When I was in grad school (PhD, humanities, Chicago style endnotes), I didn’t buy this because I didn’t know anyone that could recommend it (i.e. nobody I knew used it). I couldn’t be bothered to pay the 60 or 70 (Canadian) dollars for an unknown quantity. After graduating, I began using Scrivener for my academic writing. I Immediately lamented my earlier decision to stick with Word. This is what I use to write anything longer than five pages. Clearly, the best feature in Scrivener that distinguishes it from all other major writing programs is its binder - a way to view, organize, and reorganize your writing at any level. For my almost-400 page dissertation, within which I was frequently lost and confused, the binder would have been a godsend. There are, I must emphasize, limitations: The relatively intimidating, sometimes non-intuitive, and complicated options (for which Googling usually helps - and once you get the hang of it, these options are awesome, enabling endless customization of your writing output); if you have need for complicated footnote/endnote structures (e.g. internally complex self-references), then the lack of third party reference manager applications (refman, zotero, etc.) that can integrate with the program could be a drawback for you (for simple to moderately complex endnote structures, I’d say whatever macgyevering you have to do to make it work is a trade-off I would make for Scrivener’s Binder structure). I also use the iOS version, which I am equally a fan of. Its Dropbox syncing and generally stable nature across devices (old and new mobile devices) surpasses any cloud syncing I’ve used with Word (onedrive) or Pages (iCloud). Even when there are issues with syncing, the way Scrivener handles them (creation of conflicts folders that are dated and time stamped, along with Scrivener’s ability to easily compare documents within the application) is far more intuitive than with other writing programs I’ve used.
