From Bare Bones Software, makers of the legendary BBEdit, comes TextWrangler.

This award-winning application presents a clean, intelligent interface to a rich set of features for high performance text and code editing, searching, and transformation.

TextWrangler's best-of-class features include "grep" (regular-expression) pattern matching, search and replace across multiple files, function navigation and syntax coloring for numerous source code languages, code folding, FTP and SFTP open and save, AppleScript, Mac OS X Unix scripting support, and much more.

Remapped file extensions without asking?!

Are you seriously kidding me?? What kind of gall does a program have to have to just asssume it should be the default for all of the file types it supports. Not even so much as an alert confirmation!

Developer Response

The system has decided to make this change; not TextWrangler. However, you can use the Finder's "Get Info" window to change the application associated with a file (or all files of that type). If you're stuck, drop a line to "" and we'll be happy to help.

Excellent all around text editor

I am always on the lookout for the best text editor around. TextWrangler remains my favourite. Get it, you will be impressed. Here are a few reasons why

+ Excellent implementation of GREP and Regular Expressions.
+ Awesome text colourization
+ Vertical text manipulation support
+ Multiple file search and replace
+ Auto file backup every time you save
+ Very customizable
+ Built in command line tools
+ It's Free!
+ Too many to list them all

- I wish the developers would implement tabs for documents instead of a document drawer

Serves all my text needs

I've been using TextWrangler for a few years, and it's a solid, solid app with a very extensive feature set. My only problem with it for the last few years has been that I'd love to send them some $$$ for it to keep developing it, because I love the slimness of it compared to BBEdit (which is, in most respects, even better).

Back to TextWrangler, though. It's free, and it's awesome. What are you waiting for?
