Great app for streaming
I love this app, it would be perfect if they add support for chromecast 😊
Unsupported codecs are a deal breaker!
I have tried viewing three different movie files and got error messages about an "unsupported codec." The files will play but there is no sound. The latest incompatible file was encoded with MKV with M52 (aka AC3) audio. It seems this is pretty common for MKV files so it's kind of a deal breaker that VLC will not play this kind of file. Hope the developers fix this soon.
2.5.1 Update works now
I just updated to version 2.5.1 from 2.5.0 and it now works on iOS 6.1. The review below no longer applies to the new update. I gave 3 stars because audio for ac3 still does not work. The VLC forum has speculation that ac3 will be offered again, but as an in-app purchase. Ac3 is owned by Dolby and they are the ones responsible for pulling the codec from VLC. Apple would otherwise pull VLC entirely, if it were still part of VLC for free. Nevertheless, I'd pay a nominal fee for the codec support. Make it happen, VLC.
Review for previous version 2.5.0, which no longer applies:
[Read the title twice. It crashes any time I try to play anything. I tried playing even the lightest of files and it crashes. I deleted the app and reinstalled, but it persists. This update is one worth skipping. I regret that Apple does not allow downgrades to the previous version. That one worked flawlessly. I hope a fix to this update is soon.]
