About Bud Freeman
Mostly self-trained, Bud Freeman's unique improvisational style on the saxophone came from immersing himself in his performances, creating his own connection to the nascent world of jazz as he grew alongside it. He took up the tenor in 1925 and quickly earned a reputation which rivaled that of Coleman Hawkins. He made his name in the biggest big bands of the 1920s & '30s, working with Ray Noble, Paul Whiteman, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman, among others. After briefly taking the helm of his own band, he would settle into a permanent gig at Eddie Condon's New York club. Constantly working, practically right up to his death in 1991, the incomparable Freeman left an indelible mark on the modern jazz universe.
