About Captain & Tennille

One of the 1970s’ best-known soft-rock acts, the married duo of “Captain” Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille revelled in smooth sounds and wide-eyed proclamations of love. Dragon and Tennille met in 1971, when Dragon played keyboards for a Los Angeles production of a Tennille-composed musical revue; after the show closed, Dragon joined the Beach Boys’ touring band and recommended adding Tennille. The two struck up a romantic relationship and creative partnership while on the road, self-releasing the first Captain & Tennille single, “The Way I Want To Touch You,” in 1973. That led to them being signed by A&M Records, who went on to release their biggest hits, including the swinging 1975 smash “Love Will Keep Us Together” and the polarizing “Muskrat Love.” In 1979, upon leaving A&M for Casablanca, they struck gold again with the sumptuous “Do That To Me One More Time,” their last big hit. They stopped recording new material after 1982’s More Than Dancing, and Tennille went solo; the couple divorced in 2014 but remained close friends until Dragon’s 2019 death.
