About DJ Spinna
New York’s DJ Spinna connects the dots between rap, house, funk, soul, and jazz through his originals and remix work. Born Vincent Williams in Brooklyn in 1973, DJ Spinna began experimenting on the turntables at age 11, inspired by the city’s exploding hip-hop scene. As house music began growing in popularity over the next decade, it, too, began finding its way into his mixes. In the ‘90s, he incorporated deep house touches into his tracks as part of the underground duo Jigmastas (with MC Kriminul) and into his official remixes for artists such as De La Soul, Mary J. Blige, and Stevie Wonder. His solo output has been equally eclectic, incorporating straight-ahead hip-hop beats (“Bleepers”), jazz elements (“Duke”), and house (“Music in Me [Come Alive]”). The prolific creator, though, isn’t mixing genres for novelty’s sake but rather revealing how all these styles are interconnected and continue to coexist. He regularly makes that case in his DJ mixes and on his Apple Music Hits show, Here to There Radio.
