b. 26 April 1924, Zion, Illinois, USA. After making his Broadway debut in Marc Blitzstein’s opera Regina (1949), where his strong baritone voice made a good impression, Nype appeared in Great To Be Alive and Irving Berlin’s Call Me Madam (both 1950). In the latter his songs included ‘It’s A Lovely Day Today’ and the duet, with star Ethel Merman, ‘Just In Love’. For this role he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor In A Musical. In the mid-50s he was on television with Janet Blair in One Touch Of Venus, and was back on Broadway for Wake Up, Darling (1956), that failed at the box-office. In 1958 he co-starred with Elaine Stritch in Goldilocks, winning another Tony. He played in revivals and touring company productions of Call Me Madam and also appeared in The Girl In The Freudian Slip (1967). In 1970, he and Merman were in the replacement cast of Hello, Dolly! That same year he was in the movie Love Story. Although he gave concerts through the 70s, Nype’s career was relatively low profile. In 1980 came another movie Can’t Stop The Music, in which he had a small role, as did Tammy Grimes, although the film dealt with a contemporary pop group, the Village People. In 1981 Nype was back on Broadway for Mornings At Seven. Through the 90s, he again appeared in concert.
