About Squirrel Bait

In 1983, Louisville, Kentucky teenagers Peter Search (vocals), David Grubbs (guitar), Brian McMahan (guitar), Ethan Buckler (bass), and Britt Walford (drums) formed the scraggly, Replacements/Black Flag-inspired proto-hardcore group Squirrel Bait. Buckler and Walford would soon be replaced by Clark Johnson and Ben Daughtrey, and between 1985 and 1987, they released two brief but beloved albums via the Homestead label, SQUIRREL BAIT and SKAG HEAVEN. While they broke up shortly after the latter, Squirrel Bait’s members would spread themselves out over a variety of influential future projects, most notably McMahan’s reunion with Buckler and Walford for slow-core icons Slint, and Grubbs’s stints with Bitch Magnet and Gastr del Sol.
