Teddi King

About Teddi King

Boston-born singer Teddi King began her career in the early '50s performing in local jazz clubs, extensively working with Bostonian pianist George Wein (before his Newport Jazz Festival days) and then touring nationally with the George Shearing Quintet. This latter exposure led to a contract with RCA Records where King immediately scored a 1956 chart hit with the Broadway pop ballad "Mr. Wonderful." She never repeated this early success however, and her subsequent albums for RCA were more jazz-oriented, including a date arranged by saxophonist Al Cohn called BIDIN' MY TIME. After her RCA tenure ended, King remained relatively inactive till pianist Marian McPartland convinced her to come out of semi-retirement, after which the singer enjoyed a cabaret comeback during the '70s. Unfortunately, this resurgence was cut short when King died of complications from lupus in 1977 at the age of 48.
