Hedges and his co-author, Laila Al-Arian, interviewed U.S. military eyewitnesses who told them about Americans' actions against Iraqi civilians and how those actions have impacted the Iraqi view of U.S. forces there. Hedges is a former Middle East bureau chief for The New York Times. In 2002 he was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of global terrorism. He has also worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, and The Dallas Morning News. He is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute.
