Publisher Description
From the bestselling author of The Passenger and the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Road • In this taut, chilling story, Lester Ballard—a violent, dispossessed man falsely accused of rape—haunts the hill country of East Tennessee when he is released from jail.
While telling his story, Cormac McCarthy depicts the most sordid aspects of life with dignity, humor, and characteristic lyrical brilliance.
"Like the novelists he admires-Melville, Dostoyevsky, Faulkner-Cormac McCarthy has created an imaginative oeuvre greater and deeper than any single book. Such writers wrestle with the gods themselves." —Washington Post

Customer Reviews
A bit pointless...
On the recommendation of a friend, I purchased this book with the expectation that I would be reading something akin to No Country for Old Men, also by the same author. I'm disappointed. The main character is not well developed; he simply appears with few insights into his proclivities for, among other things, necrophilia and rape. The thick description afforded to the natural surroundings consume any semblance of a plot, and the events after Lester's hospitalization are patently unbelievable. And for what? Just another serial killer story that earns few accolades for novelty or character portrayal.
