Diary of a Skyway Woman
My Life in the Service of the Ohio Top Superstar Academy of Aerial Arts Correspondence Flight School & Mobile Beastiarium
This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.
This is a story about Monsters, and airplanes, and a ten-year-old girl named Amelia, not necessarily in that order. There are Elves, and Manticores, and Squonks, which are huge, wart-covered creatures who run away crying whenever they feel someone is making fun of them, and their warts, which is usually always. Also, there is a Gnome with anger management issues, and they are all headed to Amelia's home town on an enormous, old-fashioned blimp called a Zeppelin with the hope of becoming painfully polite new friends with human beings.
But instead of a warm welcome, humans attempt to hurt and enslave the Monsters and Mythical Beasts. To protect her new friends, Amelia must become "Captain Princess Amelia Stratosphere, Greatest of the Girl Aviators, & Queen of the Squonks", and take command of the entire Ohio Top Superstar Academy of Aerial Arts Correspondence Flight School and Mobile Beastiarium.
Rob McCleary has written for such children's television shows as Jacob Two Two, The Moville Mysteries, Pecola, and Chilly Beach.
Wondrus World Explored
I've known the author for many years and always marvel at Rob's amazing ability to weave fantastic tales of amusing creativity.
'Dairy of a Skyway Woman' is such a fine work - best read aloud for full effect to entranced children. You'll to far away lands in great adventure with our young heroine in this deeply original story.
My only wish - the reason for 4 and not 5 stars - is that there were more of McCleary's wonderful colour artworks included to help anchor me to the fantastic story. I would love to see representations of all the strange creatures described. But, then, perhaps the idea is to see the creatures each in our own minds.
A book to make your imagination soar.
This book is a "must read" both for not ready to grow up adults and their grandchildren. Imaginative and charming!!! What children's literature should be.
Such a fantastic, imaginative story. Everything about it is wonderfully original.
