(Editor's Note: VOYA's cofounder, Dorothy M. Broderick, is a well known voice for intellectual freedom for young people. The following is an editorial from the August 1980 issue of VOYA.) On January 18, 1980, The New York Times ran a story headlined, "Journalists Told 4 Out of 10 in Poll Favor Stronger Limits on the Press." The occasion was a report on the First Amendment Congress. Besides the attitude toward the freedom of the press, the Gallup poll also informed participants that "as many as three of four Americans drew a blank when asked if they knew what the First Amendment to the Constitution is or with what it deals."
